Just read an article from Health Day News. I always felt that people who get adequate sleep are healthier and better able to perform, especially in school. This article reinforces that, as it was based on a study done on new word recall after sleep. It was shown that participants were able to remember new words much better after sleep compared to within a few minutes following learning them This is because the brain activity that occurs during sleep helps strengthen memory.
Interesting!!! I am not sure when/how I learned the idea that the best time to learn and study for exams was right before bedtime. Studying just before bed was said to simply help retain the information you have learned and stored it better into memory. I never knew if this was true or not but the article you shared might help support the idea. Something to think about.
ReplyDeleteLori,
ReplyDeleteI would love to see similiar studies, possibly taking second language study into consideration. Thanks for sharing!
I have to agree with this. I can definitely tell what students had a good nights sleep and what students had a poor nights sleep in my class. I even feel a difference with myself. My memory is much sharper when I am well rested. However, with my baby still waking up in the middle of the night, there are times I feel like I am losing my mind.
